5G-INDUCE – Predictive Maintenance

The 5G-INDUCE project requires vertical stakeholders and NetApp developers to be able to smoothly deploy and manage applications in distributed 5G network environments, in a secure fashion and with strict KPI requirements. The project focuses on the Industry 4.0 vertical sector, as one of the fastest-growing and most impactful sectors in the European economy with high potentials for service development SMEs and with the capability to tackle all diverse cases of service requirements. The platform is integrated over 3 5G Experimentation Facilities in Spain, Greece, and Italy, and extended with links towards specific Industries, for the showcasing of NetApps in a real 5G environment.

One of the projects’ NetApp aims at deploying edge analytics to allow real-time condition monitoring and predictive maintenance based on machine learning, to reduce the decision-making execution time and improve its accuracy.

By using predictive maintenance the operation of the machines is optimised via the utilisation of environmental parameters as operational metrics. The 2018’s PWC report states that there is a reduction of risks associated with safety, health, environment and quality by 14%. One of the positive impacts of using predictive maintenance and anomaly detection cost of maintenance is reduced, as all service activities are implemented in the most time-efficient timeslot. The 2018’s PWC report has recorded that after factories used predictive maintenance there was a reduction of 12% in costs, as well as improving customer satisfaction by 12%.

By using Anomaly Detection downtime and operational overhead are reduced as production parameters are optimised according to operational states. The CXP Group report stated that 91% of predictive maintenance manufacturers have noticed a reduction of repair time and unplanned downtime, and 93%  observe the improvement of ageing industrial infrastructure. The 2018’s PWC report that factories using predictive maintenance extended the lifetime of assets by 20%, as well as uptime improvement of 9%.
